The Provenance
The Kolhapuri chappal carries a Geographical Indication (GI) tag: a formal recognition that ties this craft to the Kolhapur region and the artisan communities who have practised it across generations. It is not a marketing word. It is a named, verifiable origin.
Every pair in the Kapashi collection is hand-stitched by artisans in Kolhapur, using vegetable-tanned leather and techniques passed down through craft families. The Indian Cradle exists to bring work like this to a wider audience, properly named and properly attributed. Kapashi is chapter one.
The Making
We don't add anything to the craft that wasn't already there. No branded soles, no invented technology, no logo stamped into the leather. What we've built is the house around it: the curation, the sourcing story, the care in how it reaches you.
Everything below is a real material or making choice, credited to the people who made it. Nothing here is trademarked or engineered by us.
A natural material that softens, stretches, and breathes with wear. Unlike synthetic finishes built for instant comfort, it changes with you, and grows more supple with every wear.
Each sandal is shaped on traditional wooden lasts, the narrow, tapered forms long used in Kolhapuri footwear-making. This is what gives the chappal its distinctive, streamlined silhouette.
Braiding and stitching are done entirely by hand by artisans in Kolhapur. There is no machine shortcut in the parts that matter, which is also why each batch takes real time to make.
We will not stamp a brand mark onto the artisans' work. The craft is credited as what it is, not white-labelled as ours. This is a standard, not a style choice, and it does not change.
The Authentic Fit
Kapashi sandals are shaped on traditional wooden lasts, the narrow forms long used in Kolhapuri footwear-making. This gives the chappal its signature streamlined fit. We don't treat this as a limitation. It's simply how the craft has always worked.
Like any true handcrafted leather good, a Kapashi sandal rewards patience. Over the first days of wear, the vegetable-tanned leather softens and settles to the shape of your foot. The leather isn't stiff. It's structured, and structure loosens with wear.

The Indian Cradle, brand principleA firm, close fit. Wear indoors for 30–60 minutes at a time and let the leather warm to your foot. This is the leather meeting you for the first time.
Extend wear gradually. You'll notice the leather yielding at pressure points, softening and conforming. A light leather conditioner can help this along.
Your chappals have now taken the shape of your foot, in the same way Kolhapuri sandals have always worn in. There's no other pair quite like it.
